The Cultural Heritage & Racial Identity (CHRI) Lab, led by Dr. Carla Hunter, is recruiting an undergraduate research assistant to begin in Spring 2026 and Fall 2026. The CHRI Lab conducts research focused on understanding how racial and cultural identity, discrimination, and racial-ethnic identity socialization impact mental health outcomes among ethnic minority individuals. The lab uses quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods approaches to address relevant research questions.

We are currently recruiting research assistants for a study examining the effects of race-based discrimination on emotions and stress. We are recruiting students seeking to earn PSYC 290 course credit. Undergraduate research assistants will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in conducting literature reviews, participant recruitment, data management and coding, and poster presentations. No prior research experience is required.

Students must be willing to:

  • Commit to a minimum of 2 credits (6 hours)
  • Attend weekly lab meetings
  • Collaborate with others

We have a strong preference for students who are willing to commit to 2 or more semesters. Students who are able to stay in the lab for 2 or more semesters are able to become involved in several research projects and have the option to complete an independent study or honors project.

We will be reviewing applications on a rolling basis for Spring and Fall 2026 from November 10th, 2025 to April 10th, 2026. Chosen applicants will be invited for interviews.  Applicants for the Spring 2026 position will be notified before or by January 15th, 2026. Applicants for the Fall 2026 position will be notified before or by April 30th, 2026

If you are interested in joining the lab, please fill out the PSYC 290 Research Information Form and the additional CHRI Lab Undergraduate Research Interest Application. Please email completed versions of these forms to Dr. Carla Hunter(chunter1@illinois.edu) and Breanna Rogers (bjr7@illinois.edu).
