In every workplace, there are unsung heroes who tirelessly contribute to the success of their teams. On May 11th, Melissa Odom was honored with the prestigious Departmental Staff Award, spotlighting her remarkable achievements and contributions.

We took this opportunity to chat a bit and learn more about Melissa and her secret recipe for staying motivated and shining brightly on floor three.

What is your job title, and how long have you been working for the department?

  • I am currently an Accounting Officer, and I have been in the Psychology department since August of 2018.

Where are some of your favorite places on campus to unwind?

  • If I am being honest, my favorite place on campus is Starbucks or Espresso Royale! But if I am not looking for a coffee or an iced tea, I love to spend time at the sports complexes or at the Quad.

Do you have any fun trips or projects planned for the summer?

  • I have nothing “fun” planned, but there are some house projects lined up. That is definitely not considered fun in my plan book! Lake and pool time are always a must for the family. Thankfully, the lake is backyard!

What is an unexpected or quirky aspect of your job?

  • Unexpected or quirky side of my job? I have not come across anything that I really didn’t expect. When I first started in the department, I was informed I would be the key master of the building. What I didn’t expect was 8 floors of offices and classrooms to manage keys for!

What is the best piece of advice you have given or received since working here?

  • The best piece of advice I have given is it always comes across better with a smile on your face. 😊

If you could plan a “theme day” for the office, what would you choose and why?

  • I would love to have a tacky tourist theme day for the department. Not only do I love to travel, but doing theme days, regardless of the theme or spirit day, provides fun in the workplace, can motivate other members of the office, and can create cohesion.

Congratulations, Melissa! Be on the lookout for more theme days in 2024!
