We are thrilled to welcome Assistant Professor Hanyi Min to the Department of Psychology faculty as of Spring 2024! Dr. Min is primarily affiliated with the Industrial-Organizational area as well as the School of Labor and Employment Relations.

Can you briefly share your academic and professional background that led you to the Department of Psychology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign?

My research mainly focuses on the development and application of advanced statistical methods (e.g., machine learning techniques) and psychometrics tools (e.g., item response theory) to answer organizational questions. I am especially interested in extending the use of machine learning (ML) techniques to help address important organizational challenges. For instance, I am using ML techniques to examine performance trajectories and dynamics over time. I am also working to improve the feasibility and accessibility of using ML techniques by organizational researchers and practitioners. For example, how can we report ML results in a clear and transparent way that will help improve the replicability of our findings? I also have interests related to workplace diversity, especially detecting subtle forms of discrimination using advanced techniques (e.g., natural language processing algorithms to detect subtle discrimination in language).

Looking ahead, what do you hope to achieve during your time at UIUC's Department of Psychology?

I will continue my research within the field of machine learning (ML), focusing on the application of advanced ML methodologies within organizational contexts. My aim is to leverage these state-of-the-art ML techniques to enhance workplace efficiency, promote employee well-being, and contribute to fostering a more equitable work environment.

On a personal note, what do you enjoy doing outside of your academic and professional life?

I enjoy traveling and reading with families.
