Rebecca Darr receives award

Rebecca Darr (BS'90) received the award for her work on behalf of Women in Need of Growing Stronger Program, Inc. (WINGS). Darr became executive director of the program in 1999. WINGS provides emergency and transitional housing, and supportive services to victims of domestic violence and homeless women and children. The program has grown over the last nineteen years and she oversees a staff of 50 full and part-time employees.

In 2013, WINGS was awarded $1.8 million dollars to build the first new domestic violence shelter in the City of Chicago in over a decade. In November 2013, Vice President Joe Biden, along with Senator Dick Durbin, joined Mayor Rahm Emmanuel for the groundbreaking ceremony.
