It is a bittersweet feeling when a long time employee retires. You miss interacting with a familiar and welcoming colleague, but you are happy for them to start the next chapter of their lives. Then comes the wave of anticipation as someone new comes into the fold.

Soonjin Lee has recently settled in her office with a dedicated mindset, attentive demeanor, and always ready to great you with a smile.

Now that she is officially part of the team, as per tradition, it is time for five questions with our newest member of the floor three family.

1 - What is the most rewarding part of your job?

As a Grants and Contracts Coordinator, the most rewarding part of my job is helping the research administration process for our faculties to turn their research ideas into funded projects. I try to treat every proposal as if it were my own, giving each submission my full attention and care at best. I hope to continue learning and growing so I can better support our faculty's research, and I sincerely hope that they continue to produce outstanding research and secure more funding opportunities.

2 – What is your favorite building/landmark/feature on campus, and why?

Foellinger Auditorium. One of my most treasured photos is one that my husband and I took in front of Foellinger Auditorium about 20 years ago when we graduated from graduate school. Back then, we had no idea that twenty years later we would be married, raising two children, and living here in Champaign. Now, whenever we visit campus with our kids, we stop to take another family photo in the same spot and share stories about those days. It always reminds me how unexpectedly life can unfold.

3 - Describe your perfect day off in the summer.

My perfect summer day would start with a slow morning and a good cup of coffee. Summer is my favorite time to slow down and spend extra time with my kids. I'd catch up on a few things around the house (because being a mom means the to-do list never take off!), then will reward myself by taking my family to explore a new restaurant or try food from a different culture. We'd finish the day with a walk, ice cream, and a beautiful sunset. For me, the best summer days aren't about doing anything extraordinary, they are about making ordinary moments with family a little more special.

4 – Who would be on your guest list if you could invite any three famous people to dinner?

I would like to invite Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX; Warren Buffett, Chairman and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway; and President Donald Trump. Each has achieved extraordinary success in innovation, investing, and leadership. I'd love to hear what shaped their success and learn from their experiences. I'm not sure they could all see eye to eye, but it could be an unforgettable dinner for everyone. And I will make sure dessert is served before the debate gets too lively!

5 – What is the best book you have ever read?

Without question, the Bible. It's the book that has had the greatest influence on my life. I read it so many times, every morning and evening, and it's always within reach. For me, it's more than a book. That is a lifelong guide that offers wisdom, perspective, and encouragement. I always discover something new every time I read it.

Thank you , Soonjin.
