Safe Travel During Fall Break 2020

Start preparing Nov 6th!

For those who plan to travel home during Fall Break/Thanksgiving:

  • Individuals who plan to travel during Fall Break/Thanksgiving should limit themselves between Nov. 6 and Nov. 20 to essential activities only, such as attending in-person classes, testing, visiting the pharmacy and buying groceries.
  • Limiting your activity may help you remain COVID-free before you return home and may help keep you and those you care about safe from possible virus spread.
  • The dates have been selected to allow 14 days of limited exposure before travel.
  • If you plan to travel home, please test at least twice the week (preferably 48 hours apart) before you travel.
  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other health experts tell us that travel in and out of communities presents a high risk of spreading the infection.
  • If you are a student, we strongly urge that if you travel away from the Champaign-Urbana-Savoy area for the Thanksgiving holiday, you should plan to remain away until you return for the Spring semester.

For students who test positive for COVID-19 on campus on or after Nov. 10:

  • Individuals who test positive for COVID-19 on campus after Nov. 10 should think carefully about where they isolate.
  • If you plan to travel home but test positive, you should not return home immediately and isolate until you are released by the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District.
  • Once you choose an isolation location, you are not to leave for any reason until you are notified to do so by CUPHD. Isolation is typically 10 days.
  • CUPHD discourages traveling while in isolation or quarantine. If you must travel, please talk to CUPHD about your plans to ensure you are utilizing a safe mode of transportation and you have a safe environment  to isolate or quarantine at home without risk of exposure to your family.
  • Isolation as directed by CUPHD is mandatory for students. If you choose not to follow this guidance, you could be subject to student discipline.
  • If you are a student, we strongly urge that if you travel away from the Champaign-Urbana-Savoy area for the Thanksgiving holiday, you should plan to remain away until you return for the Spring semester.

If you receive a call by CUPHD and are asked to quarantine on or after Nov. 6:

  • Individuals who plan to travel home during Fall Break/Thanksgiving should think carefully about where they quarantine because of a significant exposure to COVID-19.
  • If you absolutely need to travel home, you should still plan to quarantine on campus for at least five days following your exposure and then test again to see if you have become positive and remain symptom free. Then discuss whether to return home with your parents and finish your 14-day quarantine until you are released by the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District.
  • Once you choose a quarantine location, generally you are not to leave for any reason until you are notified to do so by CUPHD. Quarantine is typically 14 days.
